PRESIDENTS REPORT 1980-1981

Academic Program

During the course of any college
year there ire times when one wonders
whether or not the academic interests
are the central interests of everyone
concerned. Fortunately those periods
of doubt are short lived, and sane mo-
ments of reflection bring the central-
ity of the College into proper focus.
It is both a challenge and a responsi-
bility to give the intellectual pursuits
of the college their well deserved
central position and to give the many
necessary additional activities their
supportive roles.

In July, 1980, Dr. Richard Reed
began his service to Lebanon Valley
College as the academic leader hold-
ing the title Vice President and Dean
of the Faculty. There was little time
for Dr. Reed to review and ponder the
academic program he found at Leba-

non Valley since the 1980-1981 year
was the year for having the Pennsyl-
vania Department of Education evalu-
ate our teacher preparation programs,
and it was also the year to begin pre-
parations for the 1981-1982 Middle
States Association reaccreditation visit.

It is a pleasure to report that the
Pennsylvania Department of Educa-
tion reapproved all of our teacher
preparation programs. Under the di-
rection of Dean Reed our self-study
for the Middle States Association
progressed through the year with
ample speed.

In addition to the work associ-
ated with evaluations, attention was
centered on the honors program, the
development of two new programs in
Christian Education and International
Business, and the reorganization of the
Department of Business Administra-
tion.

The new honors program will be
divided into two phases. An initial
phase in the freshman and sophomore
years will offer a comprehensive, inter-
disciplinary introduction to liberal
education through four honors core
courses. In the junior and senior
years the subject matter will be more
narrowly focused in honors seminars
and independent study. The two
phases will complement each other
so that skills, vocabularies, method-
ologies, and content of the initial
introduction to liberal education will
inform the student's scholarly activi-
ties during the junior and senior years.
The core courses will introduce The
Individual and Society, Human Cre-
ativity, Human Existence and Tran-
scendence, and The Nature and Im-
pact of Science.

The new program in Christian Edu-
cation aims to prepare persons to
assume responsibility for and/or in the
educational program of a local church.
It provides a program of study which
will enable the student to demonstrate
a knowledge of the content of the
Christian faith in its Biblical, ecclesi-
astical, ethical, theological, and cultur-
al dimensions. The program will foster
an understanding of the dynamics of

f i ,.!,ntiation<?t

gnomics

The new major in International
Business combines materials from
foreign language offerings, political
science courses, and courses in busi-
ness management, economics, account-
ing, and finance. Students will acquire
knowledge and skills which will enable
them to participate in the international
activities of economics and business.

The Department of Business Ad-
ministration continued to experience
growth and need for reorganization
during the 1980-1981 year. Dr. Ralph
Frey was named to chair the Depart-
ment in January, and recruitment of
new faculty persons brought us to the
level of eight full-time faculty mem-
bers for the start of the 1981-1982
year. Course offerings were increased,
and the new name for the Department
was adopted.

Student Services

The first semester began with a
grand total of 1,370 students in
our various programs. This total
divided into 884 full time and 74
part time in the day program, 109

interpersonal relations and a basic
understanding of educational methods
and communication.

in evening school, 191 in weekend
college, and 112 in the University
Center at Harrisburg. To meet the
supportive needs of the students
many service programs continued
in operation, but one program was
identified for strengthening in the
future. Several studies resulted in
recommendations to have a full-time
Director of Career Planning and
Placement with a full-time secretary.
At the beginning of the year and
during the year plans were made to
effect the recommendations, and
everything was structured to begin in
the 1981-1982 year. Mr. David
Evans joined the staff to direct the
program while Mr. Louis Sorren-
tino, who on a part-time basis gave
a sound foundation on which to
build the expanded program, moved
into the Athletic Department on a
full-time basis. Mr. Sorrentino now
serves as Director of Athletics as well
as Football Coach.

lic relations; Susan Sponsler, sports
information director.

Additional student activities and
services which attracted discussion
and evaluation but for which changes
have not yet been decided include
athletics and the College Center.
Several recommendations to increase
the effectiveness of the College Cen-
ter as the focus of student social and
community life are under considera-
tion. We hope to implement some
changes during 1981-1982. The
athletic program will face new direc-
tions in the future because of the
coming changes in the Middle Atlantic
Conference in which we participate
and because of the changes in student
interest.

The Middle Atlantic Conference
might have a change in membership
because of the desire of some current
members to be separated for football.
Other schools want a requirement that
members of MAC must participate in
the league for all Division III sports
which they sponsor. We have already
begun to work on an independent
football schedule for 1983.

Student interests in various athletic
programs have changed, and these new
interests require our consideration of
adding new sports and dropping some
long standing ones. Some specific
expressions of interest are related to
initiating women's track, Softball, and
volleyball while some decreased inter-
est in men's wrestling seems apparent.

Activities from die Chapel

Dr. John Abernathy Smith began
his services as Chaplain of LVC in
August, 1980. Immediately he under-
took responsibilities to serve as a
minister to all the diverse campus
groups, to guide the chapd-convoca-
tion scries, to advise the religious
organizations, and to guide the inter-
national students.

During Religious Emphasis Week
Ralph Abernathy educated the campus
about racism and the civil rights move-
ment and challenged the religious com-
munity to do something about the
continuing problem. In addition to the
chapel-convocation series PROJECT
and Delta Tau Chi sponsored evening
communions and other occasional
services which were generally well re-
ceived. The PROJECT retreat focus-
ing on issues of science fiction and
Christian faith was one of the best
events of the year.

International tensions have affected
the lives and academic careers of many
of our international students of whom
there were twelve in 1980-1981.

There were three students from Iran,
three from the Netherlands, two from
Japan, and one each from Venezuela,
Kenya, Tanzania, and Liberia. Their
difficulties with adjustments, requests
for political asylum, visas, finances and
vacation housing required much time
and energy.

Finances *

Lebanon Valley College has never
experienced a year during which all its
needs were met and no desires were
postponed. Many needs and desires
which surfaced during 1980 - 1981
had to be postponed or denied, but it
is a pleasure to report that income for
the year exceeded expenditures. This
achievement during a year of high in-
flation, some unusual maintenance
costs, and a capital campaign resulted
from the cooperation and efforts of
many people. The income was:
$8,263,390.58, and the expenditures
and transfers were $8,262,994.05.
More than 80% of our operating
costs were covered by student fees.
The remaining costs were covered by
gifts and grants, endowment income,
and income from current investments.
The capital campaign entitled the
Fund for Fulfillment - Phase II pro-
gressed through its first year. The
goal of $10,000,000 for this campaign
is to pay for the new Science Center
which is now under construction and
to add to the endowment. By the end
of the year commitments to the cam-
paign approximated $6,400,000. This
wonderful achievement in the first
year of the campaign certainly put the
goal within our reach.

The student fees for 1980 - 1981
totaled $6,175 for a full-time student
living on campus. This total allowed
for tuition of $4,080; student fee of
$125; room fee of $780; and a board
fee of $1, 1 W. During the year it was
announced chat the total for 1981-

1982 would be $6,975 with the separ-
ate tuition of $4,650; student fee of
$140; room fee of $920; and board
fee of $1,265. It becomes more and
more obvious that we need endow-
ment dollars and Annual Giving
dollars for students who are unable
to meet the charges without some
outside assistance. Although our
students received grants from govern-
ment and others totaling more than
$821,000 and although their loans
exceeded $1,566,000, our LVC ex-
penditures in 1980 - 1981 included
more than $520,000 for LVC grants
and scholarships. This figure means
that we used all of our Annual Giving
dollars and most of our endowment
income to meet this expenditure. This
fact alone explains our constant ef-
forts to seek more money from the
United Methodist Church, from our
Alumni and Friends, and from cor-,
porations and foundations. It ex-
plains our efforts to increase the
endowment through our capital cam-
paign. This need becomes larger as
government programs for financial aid
to students apparently will decrease.

Facilities

During the Founders Day program
we broke ground for the Garber
Science Center. With this exciting

SITE OF NEW
SCIENCE CENTER

progress it was easy to see that our
facilities will soon be the best they
have ever been for every department
of the College. In the spring the
Board of Trustees acted to name the
new science center in memory of
Dr. and Mrs. Dale Garber who pro-
vided the largest gift ever received
by LVC. Dr. Garber was in the class
of 1918 and Mrs. Garber in the class
of 1917.

In addition to constant care of the
buildings and grounds and equipment
a few major items should be noted.
A PDP 11/70 Computer replaced the
former 11/40 model. Accompanying
this change were additional terminals,

a printer, and a word processing unit.
Our quarter mile track around the
football field was changed to the
metric system. Tennis courts were
resurfaced.

As I dream into the future, I see
only two major building efforts which
could conclude the meeting of space
needs for years and years to come.
Our current library space is very lim-
ited. A new library accompanied by
conversion of the present library into
faculty offices, classrooms, and com-
puter center would meet our academic
needs for a long time. The second area
is a need for recreational and athletic
space. The completion of the Science
Center will allow for our vacating the
gym for all but athletic and recrea-
tional purposes, but facilities such as
a swimming pool, handball courts, and
indoor tennis will remain on the most
wanted list.

Conclusion

Early in the year three trustees who
served Lebanon Valley College faith-
fully and strongly through hard times
and good times were given eternal rest.
Edward H. Benson of Lancaster, Rob-
ert H. Reese of Hcrshey, and Samuel
K. Wengert of Lebanon will be long
remembered for their many contri-
butions to the strength of LVC. In
their memory and in memory of
many loyal alumni and friends who
have passed on let us support Lebanon
Valley College in a manner which will
allow high quality education and dedi-
cated service.

Lebanon Valley College continued
to be the smallest of the United Meth-
odist Colleges in Pennsylvania and the
smallest coeducational college in Cen-
tral Pennsylvania. Students came
from a wide geographic region repre-
senting eight countries and seventeen
states. Our College's small size, aca-
demic rigor, and personal concern and
respect for each student make it an
unusual center for learning. The chal-
lenges and opportunities are numer-
ous, and I pray thanks for the many
people who help meet them. Please
know that perfection is rare, but
achievement is indeed worth many
sacrifices.

Respectfully submitted,

Frederick P. Sample

LEVEL OF GIVING

It is with pleasure that we report
the giving record for the 1980-81 fis-
cal year for both the Annual Giving
Fund and for the Fund for Fulfill-
ment - Phase II. The financial stabil-
ity and the growth of the College de-

pend upon the generous support of
our varied constituencies. We are
grateful to our many donors and
hope that we have given each one
proper recognition in this report.
We apologize for any error or omis-
sion.

VICKR0Y SOCIETY ANNUAL GIVING

Membership in our most prestigious
club is offered to those alumni and
friends who gave a minimum of
$1,000 during the 1980-81 fiscal year.
We are pleased to list 1 74 names and
thank these people for the leadership
gifts provided by their generosity.
Their names are also preceded by a
"V" in other sections of this report.

PRESIDENT'S ClUB

For a minimum gift of $500 a
donor is entitled to membership in
the President's Club. On the follow-
ing pages we recognize these 132
friends and alumni with a "P" in
front of their names.

CENTURY ClUB

The Century Club, or $100 mini-
mum level, achieved a record 901
members. A "C" identifies these
members throughout the report. We
are grateful to these many donors who
provide the necessary leadership to
ensure a successful annual giving
campaign.

Many donors qualified for club
membership by making a payment
of $100, $500 or $1,000 on their
Fund for Fulfillment - Phase II pledge.

The $318,457 in unrestricted gifts
to the 1980-81 Annual Giving Fund
was truly an outstanding achievement.
Although the total is less than the
record amount raised last year, never-
theless the response from more than
2,000 alumni and friends was generous
considering that our capital campaign
was at its height. Many volunteers
helped in this effort and as a result
efforts to secure Annual Giving Funds
were perforce limited. For these
reasons we are extraordinarily grate-
ful for the $318,457.

With a full Annual Giving effort in
1981-82, we arc confident that our
dollar amount will rebound and will
indeed exceed all previous records.
The average gift from our alumni was
$76 this past year and can easily be
surpassed during the current year.

One must remember that the
Annual Giving Program helps to
make possible the current opera-
tions of the College. A strong Col-
lege — the academic program, the
students, the campus itself — calls
for significant yearly increases in
Annual Giving. The trend toward
larger gifts must continue. Our
alumni and friends who did not
contribute last year are encouraged
to participate in 1981-82.
